Katherine M. Bella, CFRE, Associate Managing Director

Bella Kathy brings more than 35 years of nonprofit sector experience to her work, having consulted for 16 years and served for more than 20 years in nonprofit executive and fundraising leadership positions. Her clients include arts and cultural organizations, health care institutions, charitable foundations, human service agencies, institutions of higher education and independent schools, environmental organizations, civic affairs and advocacy organizations, environmental agencies and religious institutions. Kathy’s specialties are capital and endowment campaign planning studies; development assessments and plans; nonprofit executive, board and chief development officer coaching and training; strategic fundraising counsel for campaigns, major gifts and annual giving and executive search.

Kathy’s clients have included the International Museum of Women, American Immigration Law Foundation, Commonwealth Club of California, the Energy Foundation, San Francisco Art Institute, Population Media Center, University of California San Francisco, Independent Television Service, Mechanics’ Institute, American Red Cross, Dominican University, Positive Resource Center, San Mateo Public Library Foundation, Earthjustice, Osher Marin Jewish Community Center, Envision Schools, Children’s Health Council, California Community Clinics Initiative, San Francisco General Hospital Foundation, YMCA of the Mid-Peninsula, Junior Statesmen Foundation, and Episcopal Community Services. She has successfully consulted on campaigns and projects ranging in size from $5M to $100M.

As a nonprofit staff person, Kathy has held the positions of Chief Executive Officer of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area, Executive Director of DES Actions USA, Vice President of Development of Planned Parenthood Golden Gate, Chief Development Officer of the Friends and Foundation of the San Francisco Public Library, and major and annual giving fundraiser for the University of California San Francisco.

Kathy completed the Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business and the Executive Leadership Program at the University of California Berkeley, Haas School of Business. She holds master of social work and bachelor of science degrees from the University of Connecticut. She is also a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE).

As an active volunteer, Kathy has served on a variety of nonprofit boards and executive committees and capital and endowment campaign committees. These include: the Association of Philanthropic Counsel; the Association of Fundraising Professionals - Golden Gate Chapter; Craigslist Foundation; UCSF AIDS Health Project; Episcopal Charities; Connecticut NARAL; ODC, a contemporary dance company, theatre and school; Friends of the San Francisco Public Library, and Synergy School, an independent K-8.

Kathy is a frequent presenter on a variety of topics in the fundraising field including nonprofit ethics, capital campaigns, major gifts fundraising, engaging your board, and strengthening your annual giving program. She has published several articles for the AFP national journal, Advancing Philanthropy, on topics related to major gifts fundraising and nonprofit coaching.
